McLaren develops next-generation chassis control system

February 2, 2017 – Ahead of the debut of the second-generation Super Series model at Geneva Motor Show on March 7, McLaren is promising that the car will offer excellent driving dynamics, with the manufacturer stating the car will have “the widest breadth of dynamic ability of any McLaren”.

McLaren has also stated that the new model will set new standards for the Super Series model in terms of cornering performance, driver enjoyment and ride comfort, with an advanced new generation of the company’s multi-mode chassis control system being key to this elevated dynamic performance. Drivers can select between comfort, sport, or track modes and the system – named Proactive Chassis Control II – will deliver the optimal balance of cornering grip, dynamic response, and comfort to best suit the chosen driving mode and the road conditions.

The Proactive Chassis Control II system will use 12 more sensors than on previous Super Series models – including an accelerometer on each wheel hub – to ‘read’ inputs from the road and measure the tire contact patches. The information can be analyzed in milliseconds by the ‘Optimal Controller’ algorithm at the core of the system, and the suspension damping immediately optimized accordingly.

An additional new feature, McLaren Variable Drift Control, is intended to provide greater involvement for drivers who want to fully explore the dynamic ability of the car, allowing the level of electronic stability control intensity to be varied with a mere swipe of a control on the central infotainment screen.

“Proactive Chassis Control II generates a significant amount of additional grip, but not at the expense of the balance and feel of the car,” stated Mark Vinnels, executive director of product development at McLaren Automotive. “The depth and breadth of handling precision and ride comfort in combination with the peerless level of driver involvement in the second-generation McLaren Super Series is simply extraordinary.”
